Surreal Creation: Making cake design a true art form

There’s definitely something surreal about the cakes from Surreal Creation: They are almost too beautiful, and too realistic to eat.

“We do things that nobody else can do,” said owner Kerri Higgins, who is originally from Clinton, but now lives in Zachary.

Higgins, in nursing school at the time, got the idea to make a birthday cake for her sister after she learned what other bakeries were charging for custom cakes. She did such a great job, some friends, then other people started asking her to do cakes for them. She obliged, working from home for a couple of years.

Eventually, she decided to turn her passion for making cake creations into a full-time job and opened Surreal Creation at 5630 Main Street in Zachary, across the street from the UPS Store. She is assisted by her sister Rachel Higgins and their friend, Teryn DeRouen.

Higgins’ cakes are as beautiful in their artistry and their creativity as they are in their delicious flavors. She still relies mostly on word-of-mouth and her Facebook page. The demand keeps her shop busy.

“We do mostly custom cakes for people, but we always have some cakes and things like cupcakes and cookies available for walk-ins,” she said.

Surreal Creation offers all types of 3-D cakes, fresh baked and three-dimensional in shape. Each one is a labor-intensive, one-of-a-kind work of art. Virtually any idea you come up with, Higgins can design a delicious cake to match.

“If anybody asks for something, we just make it: shoes, hats, big trucks, teapots, cartoon characters, it’s up to their imagination,” said Higgins. “Almost everything is made from scratch in the kitchen, so it’s fresh.”

Surreal Creation also makes wedding cakes of any size and shape, with multiple towers.

“A lot of people come to us because our prices are way below what other people charge and our cakes are prettier and tastier,” said Higgins. “Our prices are on our Facebook Page

Beside fresh-baked cakes, Surreal Creation offers cupcakes, cookies and cake pops. She also makes personalized cookies with edible images. During Mardi Gras season, king cakes made from scratch are popular and they can ship worldwide. A unique treat is the “push-up pops” which are similar to the ice cream variety, but made with cake and icing. Dipped apples are also popular.

“We can handle almost any type of special request,” Higgins said.

Surreal Creation is quickly gaining a reputation and has customers from all over Baton Rouge and as far away as New Orleans, Lafayette and Pearl, Miss.
