Make Me Over: upscale style in a boutique-beauty spa

Stephanie McMichael and Natasha Washington have spent their entire careers helping to make people beautiful. Stephanie moved to Zachary from Chicago, and has operated a beauty salon and boutique for 23 years. Tasha has been licensed for 18 years and she also owned a successful salon in Baker. “We were close friends for many years and we always wanted to work together,” said Stephanie. “The opportunity came up for us here because the salon and boutique were not working. We merged our businesses together and we’ve been an awesome team together.” After operating for almost a year as Cater 2 U in the Zachary Commerce Center at the corner of Hwy. 64 and Hwy 964, the two friends...

Surreal Creation: Making cake design a true art form

There’s definitely something surreal about the cakes from Surreal Creation: They are almost too beautiful, and too realistic to eat. “We do things that nobody else can do,” said owner Kerri Higgins, who is originally from Clinton, but now lives in Zachary. Higgins, in nursing school at the time, got the idea to make a birthday cake for her sister after she learned what other bakeries were charging for custom cakes. She did such a great job, some friends, then other people started asking her to do cakes for them. She obliged, working from home for a couple of years. Eventually, she decided to turn her passion for making cake creations into a full-time job and opened Surreal...

Zachary Driving Academy rolls out “green” CNG Civic

Zachary Driving Academy owner Jeanette Boggs recently purchased a 2012 Honda Civic GX that is one of the first cars in the Zachary area that is exclusively fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG). Because CNG vehicles are still relatively rare, they can only be refueled at two stations in Baton Rouge. Still, Brenda Dugas, manager of Zachary Driving Academy for the past eight years, says it’s worth it. The last time she filled up the car, the cost of CNG was $1.69 per gallon compared to more than $3.18 for gasoline. “It pays for itself in fuel cost,” said Dugas. “It averages 33 to 34 miles per gallon and when you figure we drive 40-41 miles per student,...

Researcher studying buildup of False River sediment

Justin Shaw has become a recognized face among locals along the Bayou Chenal and M-1 canals in Pointe Coupee Parish. He can be seen on any given day, especially after a heavy rain, in his green air raft, paddling to and from a series of research collection sites that have been set up along the two waterways. The C.H. Fenstermaker & Associates water resources engineer is collecting data to determine the amount of sediment transported from the canals to False River, as well as what water levels and conditions increase the volume of sedimentation flow into the lake. “To my knowledge this is the first comprehensive study to determine sediment loads entering False River from the watershed tributaries,...
